This neighborhood has a rich history, having survived urbanization, suburban flight, and a latter-day renaissance. According to some statistics, textiles can account for up to 4% of the municipal waste stream. Alternatives do exist, and there are companies here in town accepting textile donations for recycling. On this trip, we’ll see how clothes are collected and sorted, and what they end up becoming through the recycling process. Morning munchies will be provided.

Learn about low-cost, sustainable living options by taking a guided tour of EarthWays Center a Victorian home restored as a model of energy and resource efficiency. From repainting a room to rehabbing or building a new house ideas abound! No reservations needed, however groups of adults or youth require advance booking.
During the March tours, learn why water conservation is so important and simple things you can do around your home, such as installing rain gardens and rain barrels. The unique features in the model bathroom will be on proud display, encouraging you to use the simple tips and techniques as well as an array of devices that are easy to install and operate; all focused on saving water and energy.

Plastic The Prolific Resource: Hands-On Jewelry Project Adult Class

Field Trip: Kaldi’s Coffee Adult Class
For people who care where their coffee comes from. We’ll visit St. Louis-based Kaldi’s Coffee where barista Mike Marquard will explain Kaldi’s Relationship Program, which focuses on purchasing coffee direct from the growers. Mike will also discuss the current practices and state of coffee growing and processing, especially focused on Costa Rica and Colombia. Afterwards, we’ll tour the roasting facility and finish with a professional “cupping.”

Campers will explore sustainable home design as they create a fantasy green home from the inside out, interact with green building professionals, and hop aboard public transportation to discover new neighborhoods and homes. During the optional second week, campers will visit new sites, explore green careers, and put their skills to the test with a hands-on project.
