For Teachers (Grades 5–12)
Using the work of local artists Agnieszka Gradzik and Wiktor Szostalo, creators of The TreeHuggers Project, we will explore ways to educate students to become sustainability natives through training in the arts and sciences.
The TreeHugger Project is an ongoing work of environmental art designed to help us rediscover our relationship with nature and affirm our stewardship of the planet. Using the sculptures as a stepping-stone to initiate learning around neighborhood development, transportation, and other “green” issues, this class will also serve as an introduction (or refresher!) on the medium’s form and technique.
In addition to a hands-on component, this shortened workshop will also include focused planning time to help you develop a more effective unit for your classroom.

Teacher Professional Development: Buildings As Teachers: Teaching the Arts and Sciences with the Built Environment
For Teachers Grades 5–12
The EarthWays Center is excited to share the lessons and curriculum designed for the successful summer experience, Camp EarthWays: Young Green Builders, with teachers! Using the programming as a method for integrating the arts & sciences allows teachers to meet their curriculum goals while engaging your students and looking at our community in a different way.
Participants will develop a personalized study unit to take back to school that uses a place-based approach to education, ideally integrating emerging technologies in the classroom (using modeling systems) as well as relying on local experts and other resources to support student inquiry.
An interdisciplinary vantage point provides an unique outlook for this workshop: looking at a building from the outside in, we will draw on art theory and technique. Looking from the inside out, we take a scientific approach to indoor environments, building technology and systems. Art educators are welcome as are teachers in every field of study!
Brief outdoor excursions, hands-on activities and focused planning time will help you tailor curriculum to your classroom’s needs, using the built environment as a teaching tool. Research has shown that more than 20% of America’s population that spends about six hours a day in a school building let’s turn those buildings themselves into instruments for engaging future generations.
