EarthWays Home - A Center for Green Conversation

Throughout 2004, the Garden is celebrating the EarthWays Home 10th Anniversary with periodic special events, physical improvements and extensive community outreach. There is much to applaud, and ample reason to continually invest in early goals and visions that created the EarthWays Home.

Before and AfterAt a dedication ceremony on June 4, 1994, founders thanked dozens of contributors to the half-million dollar, landmark environmental project, and opened the building to educate the public. The EarthWays Home was developed around the belief that literally recycling an abandoned, once-elegant city dwelling into a model of resource-saving potentials would bring its conservation message home for visitors of every age, income and interest level. Informed consumers would then hold accountable lawmakers, business and their own lifestyle choices to prevent pollution and protect the environment. At the heart of these goals was a concept new to popular thinking: Sustainability.

The Missouri Botanical Garden's Gateway Center for Resource Efficiency carries on this dedicated work today, educating homeowners, business leaders, local government decision-makers and school children about the benefits of "going green." These diverse audiences meet at the EarthWays Home, where lively conversation leads to problem-solving changes in how individuals regard their environment. To celebrate the history, Gateway Center invites you to a series of events at the EarthWays Home - plan to come back often throughout the year, to continue the conversation.

A biologist and former high school teacher, Michigan native Mary Applehof
has earned international recognition for her research and commitment to
promoting the value of vermicomposting (using worms in enclosed containers)
for soil health, farming self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship.
Her definitive how-to manual, Worms Eat My Garbage, (Flower Press, 1982) is
a gardening classic. A companion workbook and other publications for
children have made vermicomposting a powerful K-12 learning resource, in
schools here and abroad. Applehof's recent travels in Oregon, California
and Russia have generated new decomposition discoveries, which the "Worm
Woman" will share with St. Louis gardeners and educators.
